Why Baptism?

Baptism represents a public declaration of a person’s private decision to make Jesus the Lord and Leader of their life. Whenever a person makes the decision to become a follower of Jesus at Compass, the next step is always baptism.

What is Baptism?

As the church began, whenever a person decided to become a follower of Jesus, they were baptized in a body of water (Acts 2:38-39; 8:12; 8:36). Even Jesus was baptized. The word “baptism” literally means “immersed in water”, so whenever a person is baptized here at Compass, they are immersed in water.

As a person briefly goes under the water, it symbolically represents their old life and every imperfection being buried with Jesus. Then, as they come up out of the water, it represents the resurrection of Jesus and their new life in Christ.

The Bible says

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Cor. 5:17).

New Life through Baptism

The waters of baptism aren’t magic and don’t automatically save a person. Instead, they are a physical representation of a very real commitment a person makes to follow Jesus. Baptism also doesn’t make you perfect or mean that you’ll never make mistakes. Instead, it is a reminder that Jesus will be present in your life, helping you from this day forward. Baptism is the very first step a person takes in their journey with Jesus and is a very special moment of declaration, renewal and celebration.
